Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan: Big Furniture Gaps in Central Asia's Smaller Markets

Eighty percent of basic building materials are imported, five countries will build 3 million new housing units, and soft furniture has become the fastest growing export category in China.

Chinese furniture companies often focus on the two large markets of Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan when developing Central Asia, but Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan are providing incremental opportunities with "small markets and big gaps".

Three numbers to understand the gap

  • Import dependencies:Kyrgyzstan has a weak industrial foundation and relies on imports for about 80% of basic building materials, with China being its largest supplier; Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan are more than 70% dependent on imports of high-strength cement, special steel, and waterproof materials;
  • Housing gap:Central Asia The five countries plan to build about 3 million new housing units in the past ten years. The average annual growth rate of infrastructure investment in the two countries is over 8%. The construction industry has become the pillar of the Kyrgyz economy;
  • Category Opportunities:Industry estimates indicate that the three countries of Gita, Turkey and China will import a total of about US$1.6-1.8 billion in Chinese building materials and about US$2.25 billion in furniture in 2025. Among them, the growth rate of upholstered furniture exceeds 120%, and the demand for doors, windows and upholstered furniture has surged.

Differentiated play style

Kyrgyzstan is positioned as a regional distribution and re-export hub (Bishkek + Osh twin centers), which is suitable for using it as a springboard to radiate to the surrounding areas; Tajikistan is mountainous and prone to frequent earthquakes, and is highly suitable for earthquake-resistant and elderly-friendly furniture. The risks also need to be clearly seen: long certification cycle (EAC, etc. 3-6 months), payment recovery cycle of 90-180 days, and high logistics costs in remote areas. It is recommended that Qingdao enterprises start with "small batch trial orders + customer acquisition at exhibitions" to control risks.
